  5.    Formatter and copier for ALADIN®, SPECTRE® and MACINTOSH® diskettes.

  10. NOTICE: The author has placed this programme in the Public Domain in the 
  11.         hope  that  you  will find it useful,  but he  cannot  give  any 
  12.         guarantee  as to its reliability (in other words use it at  your 
  13.         own  risk).  It was developped using SOZOBON C and  GULAM  (many 
  14.         thanks to their respective authors).  No version number has been 
  15.         assigned to it, simply a creation date it used.

  18.     The  programme is mainly aimed at SPECTRE users who wish to  convert 
  19. files  from  the now defunct ALADIN format.  Although SPECTRE  3.0  (the 
  20. latest  version  at the time of writing) allows you to read the  old  9-
  21. sector 696k ALADIN discs directly under MAC emulation this is only  true 
  22. if your MAC system does not reside on a SPECTRE-format floppy (as is the 
  23. case  for  SPECTRE  128 owners without a  hard  disc).  SPECTRE  becomes 
  24. confused  between the 9 and 10 sector formats that it has to  deal  with 
  25. simultaneously.  So  ALASPEC  (the  predecessor to GHOST)  was  born  to 
  26. convert between the two formats under GEM.
  27.     The  problem  of  exchanging  files  between  SPECTRE  128  (no  GCR 
  28. capability) and a real MAC, however, still remained. GHOST resolves this 
  29. by  making use of the fact that all MACs with High Density drives  (e.g. 
  30. the MAC Classic,  MAC LC,  MAC II's etc) can handle discs written  using 
  31. MFM  (Modified  Frequency Modulation) so that MS-DOS discs can  be  read 
  32. using Apple File Exchange.  It just so happens that if the MFM  diskette 
  33. contains a valid MACINTOSH file structure (MFS or HFS) then it can  read 
  34. and  written directly by the MAC.  The diskette does however have to  be 
  35. formatted  using 9 sectors per track (720k max) with  information  being 
  36. successively written on one side and then the other as each track  fills 
  37. up.  SPECTRE-format diskettes do no however use this  arrangement,  they 
  38. first  fill up one side of the diskette and the fill up the other  side, 
  39. as well as having 10 sectors per track (800k max).
  40.     GHOST  converts diskettes between these two formats.  Obviously  you 
  41. cannot squeeze a 800k SPECTRE diskette into a 720k MFM diskette,  but if 
  42. the  top 160 sectors of the SPECTRE diskette do not contain  any  useful 
  43. information nothing will be lost in the conversion. You can usually make 
  44. sure this is true. Should individual files be too big to be contained on 
  45. a  720k  diskette  they can split into two or more  smaller  ones  using 
  46. something like Stuffit.
  47.     What  follows is a very brief list of the capabilities of GHOST  but 
  48. should be sufficient to use it without any trouble.

  51. ____Format Information:

  53. Only  double-sided  MFM diskettes can be handled by GHOST  which  treats 
  54. them according to their physical structure rather than their contents:
  55.

  64. ____Settings:

  66.         Drives : A, B(if it exists)
  67.          Types : ALADIN, Mac_MFM, ALADIN version 3, SPECTRE
  68.     Capacities : 696k, 720k, 800k.
  69.          Modes : MFS(Macintosh File System), HFS(Hierarchical File System)

  71. ____Operation:

  73.     Start  the  programme under GEM in the usual way (it  does  not  use 
  74.     either  of the emulators).  Click on the various boxes shown in  the 
  75.     display window to correspond the the required operation.
  76.  
  77.     For "COPY" and "FORMAT & COPY"
  78.         You have to chose the structure of the source diskette and  that 
  79.         required  for the destination.  The capacity of the  destination 
  80.         has to be limited to that of the source.

  82.     For "FORMAT"
  83.         You have to chose the structure of the diskette to be  formatted 
  84.         as well as its capacity and logical organisation.
  85.  
  86.         If you click on the "?" for either of the diskettes it will  try 
  87.     to  determine  the  structure  of  that  diskette.  If  it  displays 
  88.     "ALv3_SPct"  it  means that it cannot tell whether it is  an  ALADIN 
  89.     version 3 diskette or a SPECTRE diskette.

  91.     Click on the operation to be perfomed.

  93.         The programme will never refuse the requested operation, but the 
  94.     result obtained depends on how accurately the settings were  chosen. 
  95.     It  is  possible to copy a SPECTRE 800k diskette to  a  696k  ALADIN 
  96.     one!!  - you will lose the excess and the MAC system will ask you if 
  97.     you want repair the diskette.

  100.         The programme has dialogues in both English & French (since  the 
  101.     author is French):

  103. ____To change language: (French/English)
  104.  
  105.     While running     : click  on  "Help/Aide" at the top right  of  the 
  106.                         window  then on "Continue",  on the next  screen 
  107.                         click on either "Francais" or "English" to chose 
  108.                         that one. Click on "Return/Retour"
  109.     Changing default  : while  on  the second  screen  described  above, 
  110.                         clicking  on "set default lang." will  save  the 
  111.                         current setting to the programme itself so  that 
  112.                         it  will be this language used when it  is  next 
  113.                         re-started.
